Many agencies discuss HIPAA compliance as if it were a software badge you purchase from an auditor.
It isn’t. It is an engineering discipline.
If you build software that handles protected health information (ePHI) in the United States, you do not need marketing stamps. You need signed Business Associate Agreements (BAAs) with your infrastructure vendors, encryption that withstands scrutiny, and an immutable audit log that clearly records who accessed patient data, at what exact millisecond, and from what IP address.
The Technical Checklist We Use on Healthcare Projects
- Application-Layer Encryption: Encrypting sensitive fields (social security numbers, health records) in the application layer before they hit the database, using AES-256 with keys managed in AWS KMS or HashiCorp Vault.
- Append-Only Audit Logs: Storing access logs in an immutable, write-once logging bucket (such as S3 Object Lock) that cannot be edited or deleted even by database administrators.
- Zero-Trust Session Invalidation: Implementing strict 15-minute inactivity timeouts, rotating JWT refresh tokens on every request, and enforcing hardware-level MFA (WebAuthn/FIDO2).
- BAA Vendor Isolation: Ensuring that every third-party service touching traffic (email delivery, crash reporting, hosting) has an active, executed BAA in place.
